The Strength of the Muay Thai Plum
Muay Thai has long been known as the art of eight limbs. It is an effective fighting style that utilizes striking combinations with punches, kicks, elbows and knees. It is the preferred stand-up style for most MMA fighters.
Muay Thai practitioners learn the basics of effective striking. This means throwing the hip and pivoting with your feet for extra torque. Students learn how to block incoming attacks and countering. Leg kicks are another Muay Thai specialty. With enough devastating kicks to the inner and outer thigh, you can take out your opponent-s foundation and bring him down.
There is one maneuver that Muay Thai is especially noted for. This is a technique known as the plum. When two fighters get in close range, they begin to get in a clinch and throw short punches and knees. The plum is a clinching technique in which you grab your opponent behind the neck or head. The proper way is to clasp your hands and squeeze your forearms together. This ensures a tight grip that would be more difficult for your opponent to escape out of. Once you have control of the head and neck, you can maneuver your opponent in any direction, because where the head goes, the body follows. From the plum position, you can throw a rapid succession of knees to the body and solar plexus. If you pull the head down enough, you can even throw knees to the head.
The plum is one of the most effective moves in Muay Thai. It is a drill that is worth practicing over and over in the gym. Practice with a partner where you clinch and try to fight for a good plum position. This is a technique that is worth investing the time to get good at. If you can secure a good plum position, you can dictate the paste of any fight. If you like what you see, keep going: Bangkok Round 3
