When most people think of any type of boxing, they instantly picture too very strong men fist-fighting, with gloves, in a cage; however, this style of boxing is a little different. Sure, they can still use their fists, but a strong kick with their leg can really give them an advantage in the round. However, most people to not have the gift of flexibility, and the feat becomes even tougher when boxers train to gain size and strength. There are a couple things these boxers can do to maximize their leg flexibility.

The first thing they need to do is to stretch their legs and core. One really good stretch is where the person sits on the floor with their legs extended, and then they reach out and touch their toes with their hands. Another thing these athletes need to stretch is their hip flexor, which basically determines how high they can kick. They should stand up and alternate swinging one leg past the other, and they can also practice kicking. They also need to use weights to train their hip flexor, core and legs. These should be done with lighter amounts of weight and high repetitions, because this will allow for a larger range of motion.

Muay Thai boxing is often referred to as the “art of eight limbs”, this designation is given in reference to the number of contact points utilized by the fighting discipline; the contact points being fists, elbows, legs and knees. Many outside observers have felt the need to unfairly brand the fighting style as being “savage” or “dangerous”. These claims are unfounded and the opinions of people whose education in martial arts is in question.

Muay Thai boxing is one of the most effective martial arts in the world, much of the criticism the style receives is rooted in that fact. Effectiveness does not equate to savageness. The amount of training and dedication required to excel at Muay Thai is monumental; it truly is a rewarding combat sport in every way.

The instances of injury are no higher for practitioners of Muay Thai boxing than that of most other combat sports, to say otherwise is simply misleading. Shin and elbow injuries can develop over time if proper rest is not attained or if you severely over train. Taking precautions to prevent issues with these parts of your body as a result of Muay Thai training is strongly advisable to all who take up the sport.

If you are a boxer looking to improve, there really is no other country to go to besides the Philippines. Though many people know the fact that the Philippines is a melting pot of amazing boxing talent, there are still people who are hesitant about coming to the country of islands. There are plenty of reasons as to why you should come to the Philippines and it’s not because of the amazing food and tourist spots.

If having the number one boxer in the world from the Philippines is proof that this country has what it takes, then you too should take the chance. The Philippines has the perfect weather to be able to train indoors and outdoors while at the same time you will be able to enjoy the exotic country. If you have never been to the Philippines, it is best to search the internet for the best Manila spots for tourists. Though you will be very focused on your training, it is still not a bad idea to take a break every now and then to see what the country has to offer. If you are serious about improving your boxing abilities, you will have to give the Philippines some consideration.

Muay Thai is one of the most competitive sports on the planet and the athletes who perform it are highly conditioned. If you’re interested in getting into Muay Thai check out our list of conditioning suggestions instead of spending all day on your CannonSatellite.com looking up what exercises to try
Focus Mitts/Thai bags: Similar to regular boxing bags and mitts, these are specially designed for the hard blows of Muay Thai. You can find them used online or work with a trainer to get some new ones online.
Cortical Remodeling: This painful and ancient process involves the repeated hitting of the shin bone in order to toughen it up. The bone actually becomes harder and is able to withstand more dead-on kicks as a result although this training regimen can be particularly dangerous.
Respiratory Conditioning: Like other sports, you’ve got to have endurance to do well at Muay Thai. Running and other cardio exercises are recommended for all new fighters as they can better prepare them for a long and sustained career or hobby in the ancient art of Thai boxing.

Muay Thai has a rich history as an integral part of Thailand’s culture. The nation has always taken pride in it’s best fighters. Although there isn’t a clear record of when the style was first developed, we know that it was created and evolved on the battlefield as hand to hand combat for Thai armies to protect against invading nations.

Royalty has long been known to watch, encourage and even participate in Muay Thai. As a representation of the strength of Thailand, the best fighters from outlying villages would travel to the capital to perform and fight in front of the king. The king’s personal body guards were also highly trained in Muay Thai (although it hadn’t been given that name yet).

The modern form of of Muay Thai began to develop in the 1920′s, as the name Muay Thai was first used to describe this fighting art. The martial art began to take shape as the nation sport as the first permanent area was built in Bangkok. Gloves were introduces and a more modern set of safety rules enforced to prevent casualties and minimize injuries to the fighters. Modern Muay Thai is an extremely popular combat sport around the world.

Elbow strikes are perhaps the signature weapon for the Muay Thai fighter. Elbow strikes can give severe injuries to opponents and are often used when an opponent is very near. The motion of the elbow when used in close proximity allows for great flexibility in striking. Here are a few traditional Muay Thai elbow strikes.

Slashing Elbow
An attack toward the upper part of the face, usually in response to a knee attack because of the closeness required. Bend the elbow closely against the arm and twist the body and shoulder to throw the elbow toward the attacker’s upper face.

Uppercut Elbow
The elbow is bent like the slashing elbow, but it is thrown upward from underneath the chin. Bend your knees as you step in so you can straighten the body for extra power.

Smash Downward Elbow
The elbow in this move strikes from a downward angle. Use the sharp edge of the elbow to come down quickly at the bridge of the nose. This has the possibility to really change a fight because of the possibility of a broken nose or tears from being hit in the nose. Be sure to guard your own solar plexus and chin with your offhand; a counter-attack can prove very dangerous.

Anderson Silva, Thiago Alves, Wanderlei Silva, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Kenny Florian, Brandon Vera and the list goes on and on. These are just a few of the elite fighters of MMA who are Muay Thai specialists. Muay Thai has become a staple in the MMA fighter’s arsenal since even before MMA became a legitimate sport. Muay Thai’s eight points of contact (two fists, elbows, knees and feet) make it a favorite for fighters because of the many options it opens to those who are willing to learn it’s secrets.

Perhaps the number one aspect taken by all MMA fighters alike, even those who don’t train specifically in MMA, is the use of Muay Thai’s powerful kicks and knees. Many other traditional martial arts that have influenced MMA do not incorporate the use of power kicks using hip torque, or the use of standing knees as a weapons. In the modern form of MMA, one is never safe and must pay attention to ever limb of the other fighter. A fighter who never uses kicks or knees is often considered to be one-dimensional and not living up to the full potential of the sport. A fighter using every weapon available to him is considered a true mixed martial artist.
